Private School Students FAQs

How do I track private school students in CECAS?

LEAs need to document two main types of private school students in CECAS - parentally placed private school students and students placed by the LEA in private schools.

Parentally Placed Private School Students:

LEAs are required to provide some special education and related services to students with disabilities enrolled by their parents in private schools. LEAs are also required to provide for evaluations of students in private schools under the Child Find provision of IDEA. LEAs need to document the referral, evaluation, placement, and provision of services to these students, including counting them in child counts and Indicator reporting. To document the parentally placed private school student in CECAS, follow the usual procedures but include these special features:

  • Select the LEA Level School in the Attending School field.
  • Select the Student Placement Type of either "Private Placement-Private Elementary or Secondary School Student" or "Private Placement-Registered Home School Student."
  • If the student receives services, select the option for Private School Services Plan (PSSP) as the type. Do not use the CECAS DEC4.

Students Placed by the LEA in a Private School.

LEAs may place a student in a private school to receive special education and related services as determined by the IEP team. Any student placed by an LEA in private school should be documented in CECAS and counted on the LEA child count. To document the student placed by the LEA in a private school, follow the usual procedures in CECAS but include these special features:

  • Select the LEA Level School in the Attending School field.
  • Select the Student Placement Type of "Public Placement-Private School/Facility Student."
  • Be sure to use the IEP as the type of plan, or use the CECAS DEC4.
